Bailocke Mountain casts its shadow over a vanished fort where darker soil still marks the heart of Gneeves. People built a circular home on the sloping ground, raised the inside to defeat the hill, and likely fired lime nearby before ploughs erased most of the rampart. The fort is no longer a fort in any ordinary sense, but the land remembers the shape of human ambition even when memory does not.

In tillage, on E-facing slope at base of Bailocke Mountain and c. 200m W of Duvglasha River. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 28m) on 1842, 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps; lime kiln shown at SSE and SW bank on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps respectively. Levelled; arc formed by scarp visible on lower side of slope where interior raised to compensate for hillslope. Soil in area of interior darker than surrounding field. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 542) as single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 28yd) on T. Breen's land, with about 'two-thirds of the circuit, levelled' and an old road passing through it. Site visible as roughly circular overgrown area in aerial photograph on 03-07-1975 (GSIAP, W388). Possible Man-made underground passage (CO041-02002-) associated with site.
