Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glenquin (glenquin By., Monagay Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human homes, farms, workshops and shelters from ordinary times. Glenquin is one of them: a circular earthworks in open pasture, with a gap where a gate or entrance once stood. The fairies entered later, because people stopped believing the place still belonged to the dead and living who made it.
In level pasture. Roughly circular area (diam. 40m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.7m) with external fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 0.2m). Gap (Wth 8m) in bank at SW. Interior level and mostly under pasture but with patches of overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
