Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glengarriff (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and Butlers built Oratory and Kilmore By, yet the fort remains nameless in their claims. Its twenty-two metre circle still holds its shallow banks against the northern slope, waiting for a handler capable of seeing further than human memory.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 22m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 0.4m); intervening fosse; outer bank low (H 0.35m), surviving to E as slight rise; faint trace of outer fosse (D 0.25m). Banks and interior partially overgrown with hawthorn bushes. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
