Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glenaglogh South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Glenaglogh South holds a thirty-metre earthen ring where a field boundary cut through its western edge, proving human hands shaped the land before fairy tales claimed it. The bank still stands one metre forty high beside a possible underground passage, waiting for someone brave enough to crawl inside. What happens in that dark tube is unknown, but the shape survives because people kept returning to it.
In pasture. Circular area (diam. 30m) defined by earthen bank (H 1.4m). Field boundary running NW-SE truncates SW side of enclosure. Possible Man-made underground passage (9031) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
