Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glenaglogh South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed, often by people who stopped asking questions and started repeating magic words. In Glenaglogh South a round fort stands about thirty metres wide inside pasture, with a field fence cutting across it and a well in the north-west quarter. Its earth-and-stone bank still rises nearly a metre on the west side, while the east half has been worn to a faint line. That is enough to see: a home, a boundary, a field, a forgetfulness, all stacked in the same soil.
In pasture. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map, with field fence running NNE-SSW across interior. Arc formed by earth and stone bank (H 0.9m) survives SSW->N on W side of field boundary; bank levelled elsewhere. Well in NW quarter. According to Hartnett (UCC), 'only faint outline of rampart remains in E half'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
