Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Glen North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a stone wall and half a forgotten field fence, the fort holds its circle on a south-facing slope above the Glen River. Cattle graze the level grass inside while loose clearance stones still lean against the outer bank, marking the line where human hands stopped and ordinary farming took over. The fairies may have claimed the hole later, but the measured earth and visible gate suggest people lived there first, naming the strange only after they left it behind.
In pasture, on S-facing slope, c. 200m to N of Glen River. Circular area (29.5m E-W; 28.5m N-S) defined by earth and stone bank (max. int. H 1.15m; ext. H 0.85m) NNW->SE; stone-built field fence replaces bank SE->SSW; low rise elsewhere. Loose field clearance stone dumped against outer face of bank to N. Interior grass-covered and level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
