Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gilltown (gilltown Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clear the soil and the fort returns, not as a dead shape but as a living edge. Measure the bank, follow the fosse and keep the one fact that matters: a human hand built a boundary large enough to be seen from a distance. The fairies may have danced inside later, but people made the circle first.
At the E end of a narrow, E-W strip of ornamental woodland, in pasture. A large, fairly well-preserved, although tree-covered, roughly circular area (int. diam. 56m; ext diam. 77m) is enclosed by a broad high, earthen bank (int. H 1.2m; Wth 7-8m; ext. H over base of outer fosse 3m) with a narrow level berm (Wth 2m) on its outer face NW-N-NE, and by a shallow outer fosse (Wth 3-5m; D 0.5m). A gap at NE (Wth 5m) may be an enlarged original entrance.
