Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gibbonstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope of undulating countryside with excellent views to S and E. Depicted as a hachured circular enclosure on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Circular area (diam. 35m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by a substantial earthen bank with slight traces of an external fosse with possible cropmark of a levelled external bank. A gap (Wth 1.8m) at E may be the original entrance feature and today is used a modern entrance gap, although a second gap at NW has also been suggested as the location for the original entrance (SMR File). There are other gaps in the bank at NE and SW which appear to be modern. Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 25 July 2013
