Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Geraldine

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a misnomer for ancient ringforts, and this one in Geraldine is no exception. A fifty-five metre circular fosse with a possible entrance at the southeast marks where people lived, worked and perhaps kept animals in an attached field long before anyone invented fairy tales. The earth still holds the shape of that ordinary life, waiting for imagination to remember what it was.
Aerial photographs (CUCAP ASU 76 and BOC 65) show the cropmark of a fosse enclosing a circular area (est. diam. c. 55m), with a possible entrance at the SE, together with the faint cropmark of a fosse defining a possible annexe or field attached at SE. Probably a ringfort site with an annexe. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 28 November 2013
