Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garrynagoord

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Garrynagoord: a 20 m circular earthwork on a SW-facing pasture slope, with a 4.8 m wide bank, shallow external fosse, and a possible 3 m causeway entrance at the SW. Cattle have worn part of the level interior, now edged with wire, while the NE ditch still holds its shape. The measurements make the frame clear; the name keeps the mystery alive.
In pasture, on a SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 20m) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.75m), with external fosse (Wth 5.95m; D 0.3m) that is best preserved N-E; possible causeway entrance (Wth 3m) at SW. Interior poached by cattle in W-sector where it has been fenced off with electric wire to form passage. Interior is level. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 18 November 2013
