Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a SW-facing slope of rising ground in an upland area. A circular area (diam. 60m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1m) reduced to a scarp in places with some traces of an external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.25m) and a possible entrance gap (Wth 2.5m) at SW. A laneway intersects the bank and fosse at W, with a forestry drain bisecting the site interior on a N-S axis. The area around the ringfort has been recently ploughed for forestry plantation. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
