Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranereagh (muskerry West By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are earthen rings built by people, not spirits, yet local stories still call them fairy forts because the shape appears suddenly in open land and seems to belong elsewhere. In Garranereagh the ring measured about twenty metres across on a south-east facing slope, large enough for a small household, a yard and a gate, though no house remains certain. Fields and clearance stones have damaged it, but the name and rough circle still give the place its identity.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; low bank remains to N. Field clearance stones dumped on bank and over area of site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
