Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranekinnefeake

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible monument remains in Garranekinnefeake, though an underground passage still lies beneath the soil. The fort has vanished from human memory, leaving a hollow space where witness used to be. What is missing is not nothing. It is the difference between a place that can be seen and a place that must be believed.
According to Power (1940, 101) there was a levelled ringfort with a Man-made underground passage (CO088-08002-) in this townland. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
