What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnamed; people built them. In Garraneduff, a circular enclosure about thirty metres wide once stood on the east-facing slope, large enough for a household, a herd, or a small defiant community. Ploughs and patience erased most of it, but a scarped bank still rises along the north and east, holding its shape against pasture and time. The fairies inherited what the people abandoned.

In pasture, on break in E-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Levelled; scarp (max. H 1.8m) survives N->E, enclosing level area to N of E-W field fence. No visible trace of enclosure S of field fence. Possibly one of five forts (8279; 8280; 8701; 9143) recorded in this townland (Broker 1937, 48). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
