What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Garrane, County Cork: earthen ringfort on an NE-facing pasture slope, mapped as a subcircular enclosure in 1842, 1904 and 1938, levelled around 1962 according to local information, now a shallow circular rise about 28.5m by 26m with a faint outer dip and an interior that slopes down to the NE. Bowman recorded it in 1934 as an oval single-ramparted fort on D. Twomey's land, nearly 29 yards by 26 yards with a bank about 4ft high. What remains is small enough to walk across in a breath, yet large enough to have kept out rain, wind and ordinary forgetfulness for generations.
In pasture, on NE-facing slope. Depicted as hachured subcircular enclosure on 1842, 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. According to local information, levelled c. 1962. Survives as roughly circular area (28.5m NW-SE; 26m NE-SW) defined by low rise (ext. H 0.4m), with slight external depression to NNW and N. Interior slopes down to NE. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 543) as oval-shaped, single-ramparted fort (c. 29yd x 26yd; bank c. 4ft H) on D. Twomey's land.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
