Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gallid

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gap remains in the earthen wall, yet the fort still occupies a narrow southern shelf where western ground drops away like a cliff. Its missing entrance suggests people once knew the exact opening before memory faded. The fairies may have taken that knowledge back when they built the fort, leaving only a closed circle behind.
On a shelf of level ground on a S-facing slope; the ground level falls away steeply to the W. A raised circular area (diam. 36m) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 3-5.5m; H 0.55-1.55m) with an external fosse (Wth 6.8m; D 0.4-1.4m), which is identifiable only at N. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
