Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Fynagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fynagh holds a broken oval rath where earth and stone still form a bank around a hollow place. The ditch survives from northeast through east to west, while a narrow southwest gap may mark the entrance used by people long before the land forgot them. A nearby house site suggests this was not a decorative mound but a working home, perhaps crowded with children, firelight and argument. The fairy name comes later, when humans lost the facts and gave the uncertainty to something else.
Poorly preserved oval rath (48m NNE-SSW; 33.3m ESE-WSW) defined by a bank of earth and stone and an external fosse; the latter survives from NE through E to W. A gap (Wth 2.9m) at SW may be original. A possible house site (GA100-086001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 December 2017
