Fairy forts are earthen ringforts that people stopped using but never forgot. In Friarstown North the bank has been levelled until it is barely visible, yet the shallow circle still holds its shape on the sloping pasture. The forgetting is the interesting part. A place can lose its walls, stop being defended, and still be remembered as the kind of site where the unusual lives.

Situated on a NE-facing slope in rolling pasture. The monument depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a sub-circular enclosure (c. 20m E-W; c. 20m N-S) has been levelled. It is now evident as a sub-circular area (30m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by a levelled bank (int. H 0.1m; Wth 3m; ext. bank 0.4m) from E to NNW and elsewhere by a scarped edge (Wth c. 4m; H c. 0.4m). A slight linear rise, which might represent a ploughed-out field boundary, runs N-S c. 5m to W of the monument. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 May 2013
