Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Frankford OR Ballykieran

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairies built the fort in Frankford or Ballykieran. A person cut the ridge, dug the ditch and stood inside the circle while others passed by. The name changed later because people believed more in fairy stories than in the hands that made the place.
At the W end of an E-W ridge and partly formed by scarping of that ridge, in rolling grassland, with small patches of bog to N and W. Ringfort consists of a roughly circular area (diam. 37m N-S; 35m E-W) enclosed by a slight bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.2m) in the S quadrant and by a scarped edge (H 1.2m) elsewhere. An external fosse (Wth 1.7m; D 0.3m) is visible from SE-S-SW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 17 January 2018
