Magic and mystery surround the fairies, yet human hands built the fort. The earthen ringfort in Faughart Lower stands as a fairy fort in local story, but its double banks and stone foundations reveal human craft. The site is levelled now, but its shape remains in memory. What is forgotten in soil may still influence the place.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 30m N-S, 25.5m E-W) enclosed by two banks with intervening fosse. Inner bank (Wth 5.6m, H 1.56m internally, 2.1m externally), fosse (Wth 3.4m, D 1m) and outer bank of large stones and earth (Wth 2m, H 1.4m internally, 0.5m externally). Ancient entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) in inner bank and causeway (Wth 5.3m) across fosse at SW. Possible Man-made underground passage (LH004-025002-) in interior. Site now levelled. (CUCAP, AYM 46)
