Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Fartadreen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fartadreen is a vanished ringfort on a high Cavan knoll, lost to grass and time. It defies easy belief because the land itself seems to have forgotten the shape of human ambition.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Situated on the SE shoulder of a high knoll. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Fartadreen is a likely early-medieval defensive or domestic site, characterized by a circular earthwork. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, and they were often avoided due to beliefs in supernatural inhabitants.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
