Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Esker South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Esker South holds a substantial earthen ringfort on a low but prominent rise, its fifty-metre diameter marked by a thick bank of earth and stone. Modern drystone walls now reinforce the outer face, while a narrow drain at the base likely transforms an older defensive ditch. The southeast entrance remains the strongest candidate for the original gateway, preserving the shape of a place where human hands first bent nature into a circle.
On a low but prominent rise in pasture. A raised subcircular area (50m E-W; 46m N-S) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.5-5.8m; H 1.1-1.25m). Modern drystone-walling has been applied to its outer face from W-N-NNE. At the external base of the bank is a narrow drain, which is probably a modification of a fosse. A report in 1990 (SMR file) suggested that the original entrance may have been at SE. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 11 January 2011
