Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dúráithe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An earthen ringfort in Dúráithe stands on the eastern slope of a hill, commanding both Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. Its subcircular shape spans thirty-nine metres, defined by two banks and a central ditch, though the outer wall survives only from north-northwest to north. A gap at the east may mark the original entrance, while a field bank radiates southwest from the monument. The structure remains in fair condition, witnessing centuries of human activity above the water.
On E slope of a hill overlooking Lough Corrib to S and Lough Mask to N. Subcircular rath (NNW-SSE 39m) in fair condition. Defined by two banks and an intervening fosse; the outer bank survives only from NNW to N. A gap at E may be original. A field bank radiates from the monument at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
