Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dungonnan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals may have built the fort, but the fairies took it over and still meet there at dusk. The earthen bank and deep fosse remain intact, with the eastern causeway marking the entrance they still use. Dungonnan has belonged to the hidden people ever since, which is why the grass grows thicker inside the ring and shadows move before sunset.
Raised circular area (int. dims. c. 35m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. Break in bank with accompanying causeway at E represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
