Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumbess

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and the unknown woman sat inside the ancient fort, surrounded by trees and memory. She said she had lived there before human tools and left when people came to claim the land. Her words sounded like joke or warning, but the shape of the fort and the warmth in her voice made her claim feel possible.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 27m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank, a wide, deep waterlogged fosse and slight traces of an outer bank which appears modern. Wide break in inner bank at N represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
