What is recorded here

Dromkeen East holds a massive earthen ring, thirty-four metres across, with a broken boundary that invites entry rather than resisting it. The soil rises three metres above the surrounding land, creating a small elevated room where human life may have flourished before forgetting the exact names of its residents. Its incomplete circle suggests transformation rather than abandonment, as if the fort became a threshold instead of a fortress.

Internal diameter 34m N-S, 34.6m E-W Blackpool fort. This univallate rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a well-defined bank and an exterior fosse can be noted for most of the site except to the NE through E to SE. The enclosing earthen bank rises to a maximum of 3.2m externally and 1.4m above the interior, and is on average 6.5m wide at the base. The exterior fosse is c 2m wide and .6m-l.6m deep. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and access is gained by a c 4m wide entrance to the E. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’.
