Lisroe, the russet ringfort, still stands thirty-four metres wide in Dromgower, its thick earthen bank rising above a sharp outer ditch. Inside, a long stone structure and a small stony mound wait in the dark, perhaps marking a house and a hidden passage. The fort overlookes the surrounding fields, inviting imagination about the people who shaped its banks and watched the horizon from within.

Lisroe/Lios Rua (russet ringfort). This site is situated three fields NE of KE014-065----, and it has an extensive view of the surrounding area. A fieldbank runs along the exterior side of the NE sector. This univallate rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a bank and exterior fosse. The enclosing earthen bank is well defined and is, on average, 6.7m in width at the base. It rises to a maximum of 1.8m above the fosse and 1.2m above the interior. The exterior fosse is round bottomed and well defined. It is 1.6m-2.6m wide and .9m deep. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and access is gained by two entrances: one to the N measuring c5m in width, the second to the SSW measuring c3m wide. In the SW to W sector of the interior is an oblong enclosure, 6m x 17m externally, constructed of stone with 1m thick walls. This is possibly a house-site (KE014-025001-). Immediately W of this is a small mound, 1.5m x 3.6m internally, which displays a lot of stones, possibly suggesting a Man-made underground passage (KE014-025002-).
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 476. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
