Red earth still marks the broken fort where four stone houses waited for people who stopped coming. The wide bank rings Dromgower like a chest breathing under the sky, sealing whatever life vibrated inside it.

Lisderg/Lios Dearg (red ringfort). Situated SE of St Mary's Church (RC) with good views in all directions, this site consists of a circular area enclosed by a 5.5m-wide earthen bank that rises to 1.6m externally and .9m above the interior. The interior is at much the same level as the surrounding land and contains four house-sites (KE014-023001-) constructed of stone. In the W sector is a sub-semi-circular enclosure that curves into the bank. About 2.6m N of this is a small rectangular enclosure 4.2m x 3.5m externally and walls .6m thick. To the SE of the sites, the largest house-site is sub-rectangular, 8m x 7.4m externally, with walls about 1m thick. Other loose stones are to be noted in the interior.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 474. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Lisderg, or Lios Dearg, is an early-medieval earthen ringfort in Dromgower, likely dating to between the 6th and 10th centuries. The name "Lios Dearg," meaning "red ring," may refer to the reddish hue of the soil or a local legend, and such sites were often associated with fairy folklore in Irish tradition.
