Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drish

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a natural rise in rough terrain. The area appears to have been quite marshy but has been drained and the areas E and W of the site planted with a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. The site is very overgrown with scrub and mature conifers in the interior and scrub around the bank. A circular area (diam. approx. 27m) enclosed by a well-preserved earth and stone bank (Wth 1.1m; int. H 0.57m; ext. H 1.27m) and flat-bottomed outer fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 0.44m). There is no obvious entrance feature visible but two gaps have been broken through the bank at W and N. The well-preserved condition of the bank and the freshly cut appearance of the flat-bottomed fosse suggest possible reuse as a tree-ring. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
