Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Downs

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a prominent rise in gently undulating grassland, with good views. The stream which marks the townland boundary with Monkstown lies 110m to W. An oval shaped area (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a shallow external fosse visible from NNW-NNE. The interior rises towards the centre, where two trenches have been excavated, which appear to be of recent origin. The perimeter has also been quarried into at ENE. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 2.6m) at ESE. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 March 2018
