What is recorded here
Magic is not about believing in the unseen. It is about recognising the life already present in what others discard. The chamber contains no ghost, no god and no hidden world. It contains an edge of human vision. Most people busy themselves until death. The woman stood still, watched the chamber and remembered that she is not a small creature pretending to understand the universe. She is a living expression of the universe experiencing itself. The chamber does not need her worship. It needs her recognition. When she stops wanting to control the universe, the universe stops threatening her. That is the doorway.
Internal diam. 23.5m
A univallate ringfort situated about 500m S of Tralee Bay, at the foot of the N slopes of the Slieve Mish mountains. Dense vegetation obscures the interior and parts of the enclosing bank. The bank rises a maximum of 1.6m above the surrounding field and .5m above the interior. It is composed of both earth and stones, the inner flank being almost entirely earthen and the outer flank being made up mainly of small stones; some of the latter, particularly along the W and NW edges, are probably field clearance debris. A line of stones along the base of the inner edge at WSW may be the remains of an inner revetment, but it is traceable for only about 2m and the stones protrude only a few cms above the surface. There is no clear evidence for an entrance but it may lie in the S sector where the bank is only .4m high externally and barely perceptible internally. An external fosse, 2m wide and a few cms deep, is faintly discernible, and appears to surround the entire site.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 390. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
