Fairy fort in Derryolam, County Monaghan: an embanked enclosure about thirty metres across on a low ridge, called a fort in gothic lettering on the 1834 map, then absent from later maps and still invisible under pasture. It may have been a boundary marker, a seasonal shelter, or a child’s fort invented by adults who wanted the land to sound old. The fairies keep what the surveys dropped.

Located on the spine of a fairly low NW-SE ridge. It is depicted as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) and described as a 'fort' in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, but is not shown on later maps. No archaeological feature is visible at ground level in pasture. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
