Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Derra (iraghticonnor By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lios an tobair is a circular earthen fort in Derra with a 27m internal diameter, a 1.6m high bank and a faint exterior ditch. Its southeast gap admits a person into a quiet red chamber where a hidden well may still give water. The fairies never appeared, but the name and shape suggest the chamber belonged to them.
Internal diameter 27m NE-SW, 29m NW-SE Lissatober/Lios an tobair (ringfort of the well). This is a univallate rath consisting of a circular area enclosed by an earthen bank and an exterior fosse. The exterior height of the bank is 1.6m, the internal height on average .8m. The width of the bank at the base varies between 3m-5m. To the SE is a c 3m wide gap providing access to the interior. The fosse survives as a very low, barely perceptible depression which measures c 4m in width and .3m below the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 163. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
