Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dangan Oughter

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Dangan Oughter: a subcircular earthen ringfort, forty-four metres north to south and forty-two east to west, set on a north-facing grassland slope in County Galway. Its bank and ditch remain clear enough to walk the difference between inside and outside, while faint outer banks reappear at the north and southwest as if the fort kept adding rooms nobody entered. The eastern gap may be the door the place still uses.
On a N-facing slope in grassland. Subcircular rath (N-S 44m, E-W 42m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and intervening fosse. Traces of an outer bank are visible at N and SW. A gap at E could be original. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
