Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curtaun

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often the homes of hidden peoples rather than human fortifications. In Curtaun, a circular enclosure about thirty metres across stood in reclaimed farmland until field clearance levelled it around 1980. The earth was taken, the boundary erased, and the fort disappeared beneath ordinary agriculture. Whatever lived there may have simply moved, leaving no trace but the memory of a small round place where the land once held its shape.
In reclaimed farmland. Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). According to local information, this small ‘fort’ was levelled c. 1980 during field clearance. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 February 2019
