Fairy forts are earthen ringforts abandoned before written history, yet local people kept calling them fairy forts because the shapes still suggest hidden life. In Curraheen the rim may have marked a home, a boundary or a place of exclusion, while the hollow centre kept rain, soil and silence. The fairies may be a later name for the same idea: some places remain outside ordinary ownership and human explanation.
