Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curraghs

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts disguise human history because people believed the fairies lived there. In Curraghs a forty-five-metre earthen ring stood in open pasture, mapped repeatedly and probably levelled in 1969. That is the tragic part: a visible ancient boundary was erased after being known for generations. The fairy name did not create the fort, but it helped decide its fate.
In level pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) on 1842, 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps; lime kiln marked on WNW bank on 1842 OS 6-inch map. According to local information, levelled in 1969. Bank to W may survive in field boundary with shallow external fosse; no visible surface trace of remainder of enclosure in field. May be single-ramparted fort (diam. 45yd) recorded by Bowman (1934, 385) on Mrs O'Connell's land, with fosse infilled, rampart 7ft H and interior c. 3ft higher than outer field level. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO015-164---) c. 18m to W of ringfort. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
