Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic fort in Curraghcloonabro East. Circular earthworks with broken ring and water channel. Nearby cooking site suggests people ate, drank and gathered beside it. The fort still marks a lived landscape where ordinary life and local belief overlapped.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Circular area (32.2m E-W; 30.8m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.1m) with external fosse (D 1.55m). Break in bank to SSE (Wth 1.4m) and NW (Wth 4m). Fosse waterlogged, feeds into drain to NE; partially infilled to N; truncated on ENE side by field boundary. Fulacht fiadh (CO007-013001-) in adjoining field to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
