Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curraghboy (rathconrath By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on top of a small natural rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 33m NW-SE; 28m NE-SW). Annotated ‘fort’ on 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Not depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Described in 1971 as a levelled ringfort, part of which was recently removed. At that time it was visible as a curvilinear cropmark (Wth 4m) from WSW-N-NNE showing differential growth, which probably represented the remains of a backfilled fosse. The interior has a SSE-facing slope. Faint outline of levelled ringfort visible on Digital Globe aerial photography.
