What is recorded here
Lisnaheirka is a thirty-five-metre earthen ring perched on a steep scarp above the Finglas river, where the western bank rises four metres before dropping into water. The eastern edge has surrendered to a straight road fence, yet the interior still holds uneven ridges that may mark ancient cultivation or forgotten footpaths. Local memory whispers of an underground passage beneath the soil, transforming the ordinary earthwork into a hidden chamber waiting for discovery.
Internal diam. 35m
Lisnaheirka/Lios na hAdhairce: A univallate rath situated on the upper edge of a steep scarp above the Finglas river which lies c. 15m to W. A roadway runs alongside the site at E and section of the enclosing bank in this sector has been replaced by the straight road boundary fence. The bank is a maximum of 1.75m high internally and the external height ranges from c. 1m to at least 4m on the downslope side where it is further emphasised by the steep natural drop to the river. No clearly defined entrance is preserved. The uneven surface of the interior seems to be due to the presence of cultivation ridges, but dense vegetation prevents a close examination. The Co. Kerry Field Club (1939, 17) recorded an 'interesting Man-made underground passage' here.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 377. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
