Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Crumpaun

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Crumpaun holds a broken earthen ring beside Glenade, marked as a fort on maps since 1835. Its bank still stands half a metre high under the pines, though the ditch and south entrance have largely surrendered to the slope. The fairies may have taken the rest, but human hands cleared that circle and watched the valley long before the trees arrived.
Marked as a small circular feature described as a ‘fort’ on the 1835 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a hachured feature on the 1909 ed. It is situated near at the head of a small U-shaped valley overlooking Glenade valley to the E and NE with the headwaters of a small stream c. 100m to the SE. It is a circular area (diam. 26m E-W; 25m N-S) within a coniferous forest which is defined by the remains of an earthen bank best preserved NW-NE (Wth 5m; max. int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.5m), but reduced to an external scarp (min. H 0.3m at S, downslope) elsewhere. The bank is accompanied by traces of a fosse (Wth 4m) NW-NE and the entrance (Wth 2m) is evident as a dip in the perimeter at S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
