Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Crean (glenquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Crean holds a broken fairy fort where a quarry bit through the north bank and a drain now cuts across the wet interior. What remains is a shallow circular scar in level pasture, yet its south gap, faded fosse and field boundary still trace the shape of a place people once entered, used and forgot.
In level pasture. Circular area (36.6m N-S; 32.6m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.55m), with external fosse (D 0.4m; Wth 1.8m) NW->SE. Gap (Wth 5m) in scarp at SE. Edge of site quarried on N side; drain runs southwards from quarry across interior. Site enclosed by field boundary SE->WNW; portion of boundary recently removed WSW->NW. Interior level, waterlogged and clear of overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
