Marianne and the fairies claimed the lost ring at Dungonnan before human memory began. She crossed the waterlogged ditch at midnight, entered the broken causeway, and refused every promise of gold. The fairies offered marriage, children, and a palace beneath the hill. Marianne asked only to leave before dawn. They raged, transformed the annex into a maze, and swore the fort would swallow one life from her line. Her grandchildren heard dragging feet behind the earthen bank on storm nights. Marianne never returned, but her family still lives.

Raised apparently subcircular area (int. dims. c. 49m NE-SW; c. 39m NW-SE) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, partly waterlogged fosse. From E-SE-S, fosse and bank have been modified and incorporated into the field boundary. Bank is absent or very slight from ENE-E-ESE. An earlier report (OPW 1968) noted the presence of a low external earthen bank from SW-W-NW. Break in inner bank with accompanying causeway at SSW represents original entrance. Attached to the site at NE is a small crescent-shaped annex (dims. c. 30m NW-SE; c. 12.5m NE-SW) bounded by a low earthen bank. Densely overgrown with vegetation.
