Fairy fort in Cornecassa Demesne, County Monaghan: a 38m earthen ring on a hill in Smith’s Wood, with three one-metre gaps and a narrow bank cutting north to south. The gaps face east, west and south like doors left open for wind, rain or somebody quicker than people. The central bank divides the circle into two living rooms, as if the fort were built for argument, ceremony or a game still being played.

Located on top of a hill, in Smith’s Wood. This is a wooded circular area (diam. c. 38m) defined by an earthen bank (max. Wth c. 2m; int. H c. 0.1m; ext. H c. 1.1m) and an outer fosse or drain (Wth. c. 0.9m). There are entrances at E (Wth 1m), W (Wth 1m) and S (Wth 1m). A N-S earthen bank (Wth c. 2m; H 0.5m) runs through centre. It may be a landscape feature associated with the demesne. Date of upload: 14 April 2011
