Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corcloghan (clankee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Corcloghan, County Cavan: an earthen ringfort beside Lough Tacker, marked on the 1836 survey but no longer visible at ground level. The land may have swallowed the ridge, or the ridge may have refused to be seen. In either case the fort remains a presence, turning the ordinary field into a chamber where human life and fantasy share one address.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 ed. and 'Site of' on 1876 ed. Situated in low-lying ground adjacent to Lough Tacker. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
