Fairy forts in Ireland are often earthen ringforts built by people, and Coolnahinch was one of them. It stood in rolling pasture as a raised circular area about 28 metres across, enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. The rath has since been levelled, leaving only a low, irregularly shaped mound of earth and stone no more than 0.3 metres high. What remained was small enough to walk past and large enough to suggest that the field had once held a whole life inside its circle.

In rolling pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 28m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. The original entrance may have been at NE. The rath has since been levelled and its location is marked by a low, irregularly shaped mound of earth and stone (max. H 0.3m). Compiled by: Patrick F.
