Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolmain

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolmain stood on a west-facing slope above Coolmain Bay before ploughing and building flattened most of its bank. A slight rise and a western field fence still hint at the lost circle. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there while the bay gave fish and storms gave the fort its edge.
In arable, on W-facing slope, overlooking Coolmain Bay. Levelled; slight rise remains in area of site. Field fence to W may respect line of levelled bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
