Fairy fort in Coolcaw, County Longford: a 29-metre earthen ring on a low pasture rise, its sharp edge partly erased and its wet ditch partly swallowed by field walls. The name suggests people once refused to explain it, preferring wonder to measurement. What is left is a shallow circle holding water and memory, large enough to enter but no longer clear enough to judge.

On a low rise in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 29m) defined by a scarp (H 1.5m), which has been largely levelled at SW. At the base of the scarp from E-ESE-SE is a waterlogged fosse (Wth c. 2.5-3m; D 0.4m). From NNE-NE-E this has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. Elsewhere it has been infilled. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a low outer bank from S-SW-WSW; it is no longer identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F.
