Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolbane (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Coolbane held a twenty-eight-metre earthen ring on a sun-warmed slope, standing beside a lime kiln until ploughs erased it. The 1842 survey still draws its circle, preserving a shape that human hands have forgotten. Fairy forts invite that much larger thinking because ordinary people built them for housing, herding or ritual, then disappeared into the soil.
In pasture on SE-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 28m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, with lime kiln on SW edge. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
