Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolanarney

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-two metres of packed earth still stand in Coolanarney pasture, marking a boundary drawn before written memory. A hidden passage curls beneath the northwest grass while a shallow ditch holds rainwater against the outer bank. The fort has surrendered much of its shape to farm fences and a lean-to shed, yet the circle remains clear enough to walk. It is not a fairy tale but a human residence that time has softened into mystery.
In level pasture, which falls away gently to N and NE. Circular area (32.5m N-S; 32.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.75m); second earthen bank (H 0.6m) survives W->NE, with intervening waterlogged fosse. Break in inner bank NE->E; incorporated into field fence system E->SSW, with laneway to outside; gap (Wth 3.3m) to SSW. Interior surface uneven; Man-made underground passage in NW quadrant; lean-to shed built against W bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
